Inside Greece’s High-Stakes Gamble With Iran
Diplomacy, defense, espionage, and billion-dollar tankers collide in the Mediterranean
Welcome to this week’s Planetwonk Experiences newsletter, your weekly viewpoint on the events, debates, and daily stories shaping modern Greece.
Greece Balances Diplomacy and Defense in the Middle East
Greece is prioritizing diplomacy over direct military action in the escalating Middle East crisis to maintain decades of regional relationships and prevent further instability. Officials warn that military intervention could disrupt energy supplies, cause refugee flows, and destabilize the southeastern Mediterranean.
The move comes after an attack on the British airbase at RAF Akrotiri, which is attributed to Iran-linked proxies. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has called for an immediate European response. In coordination with European allies, Greece has strengthened air and naval security around Cyprus, deploying F-16 fighter jets, frigates, and Patriot missile systems.
Meanwhile, Turkey is reportedly considering sending F-16s to northern Cyprus, further increasing tensions. France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands have also bolstered Cyprus’s defenses, seeking a balance between deterrence and avoiding escalation.
Additionally, Greece is supporting Bulgaria by deploying a Patriot battery and F-16s in northern Greece, providing anti-ballistic coverage amid Iranian threats and ongoing NATO exercises.
Spy Arrest at Souda Bay
Greek authorities arrested a 36-year-old man at Athens’ Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, accused of spying on the Souda Bay naval base in Crete. Of Georgian descent and originally from Azerbaijan, the suspect allegedly communicated with Iranian contacts via an encrypted app and took numerous photos of the base, which serves Greece, the United States, and NATO.
Investigators are examining whether this case connects to a larger Iranian-linked intelligence network, echoing previous espionage incidents involving Azerbaijani nationals in Greece and Cyprus.
High-Risk Shipping: George Prokopiou and the Strait of Hormuz
Greek billionaire shipowner George Prokopiou has sent at least five tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, despite rising military tensions. The ships sailed with armed guards and temporarily turned off tracking systems to reduce the risk of attack.
The strategy takes advantage of soaring freight rates, with charters reportedly reaching $440,000 per day, reminiscent of legendary Greek shipping magnates Aristotle Onassis and Stavros Niarchos during the Suez Crisis. Prokopiou, founder of Dynacom Tankers and Dynagas, controls around 70 tankers and has a personal fortune of roughly $4.7 billion, underscoring the vital role of the Hormuz passage in global oil and LNG supply.
Golden Dawn: Historic Convictions Upheld
A Greek appeals court has confirmed that the far-right Golden Dawn operated as a criminal organization, upholding guilty verdicts of 42 members. Senior figures—including founder Nikos Michaloliakos, Ioannis Lagos, and Ilias Kasidiaris—were convicted, along with 11 former MPs.
The ruling addresses violent crimes linked to the group, including the 2013 murder of anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas and the 2012 attempted murder of Egyptian fisherman Abuzid Embarak. Lawyers and victims’ representatives hail this as a historic step toward holding extremist violence accountable.
